Class has started! We are into week one of Stacy Julian's class A Library of Memories. If you've taken this class before, remember back to week one and maybe you'll understand how I'm feeling... energized, slightly confused, a bit overwhelmed, and empowered.
I'm excited to use Stacy's LOM approach for organizing my photos and layouts. As a long-time chronological scrapbooker, I was often setting limitations on myself about what I could scrapbook and in what order. And I know that I'm missing connections between the present and past when I'm so focused on getting "caught up" on events-based layouts.
Last fall I took Ali Edwards' class at BPS, Yesterday and Today. This was my first shift in mindset about what I wanted to scrapbook and how to tell the important stories. This first week of LOM touches on some of the same basic principles as Yesterday and Today did: what are your most and least favorite aspects of your layouts, what is your most and least common layout type, are you telling the whole story (by answering the five Ws - who, what, where, when, why).
In order to figure out our most and least common layout type, we were asked to review our completed scrapbook layouts and flag them with the sticky notes you see above. Each layout had to be labeled as one of four categories: All About Us, People We Love, Places We Go, or Things We Do.
It was a fascinating exercise, but to be honest I wasn't surprised by my own results. My stack of Things We Do is very very high. And my stack of People We Love is low. As in the lowest. I guess this is what happens when you scrapbook that we went here and then we did this and then we had this party... instead of about the relationships in our lives. The lesson that I already suspected is that I'm not often scrapbooking about what matters most in our lives.
As for the five Ws, I'm pretty consistent in answering the who, what, where and when. I'm not always talking about the why. I'm looking forward to getting further into class and talking more about the five Ws and journaling.
In the meantime, I'm still working on the week one assignment, which is to create a layout from our least common group, then answer the least common W. So I'll be doing a layout about People We Love and why. Sounds fun to me!
And yes, I'm still working on the pre-work. I'm still purging photos and have our 2008 and 2009 photos left to go. I purged almost 4,000 photos from 2007 and felt really great about that. I know it will be a huge relief to finish the purging process. Then it's on to importing it into the Photoshop Elements Organizer, tagging/rating, and creating seasonal highlights folder. This is where the overwhelmed feeling comes in. I've never used a photo organizer before, even though I've had the program on my computer for years. So there's some learning to do, for sure!
Are you taking Library of Memories? I'd love to hear your thoughts on week one!
